Asa Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), MITRE staff aretasked with applying their skills to impact programmatic and technicaldecisions of highest importance to the country. The MITRE Corporation’s AerialCommunications Department supports communication capabilities of both mannedand unmanned aerial platforms used by the United States military andInternational partners. The Aerial Communications Department is in a uniqueposition; while our work is applied to airborne platforms, we are responsiblefor developing communication capabilities that span the Space, Aerial, Terrestrial, Nuclear, and Cyber military operational domains. This provides staff an opportunity to work and grow their technical and leadership skills across a broad spectrum of disciplines. The department’s primary areas of concentrationare in RF communications, networking, modeling & simulation, systemintegration, as well as software programming. Early- career staff may opt todevelop in-depth technical expertise in one of the areas of concentration ordevelop a broad skillset across the breadth of concentration areas.
Examplesof new early-career hire tasks include:
1.Characterizethe RF, interference rejection, and networking performance of militarycommunications systems in a hands-on laboratory environment. Analyze, document, and present the results toimpact airborne communication systems designs and operations.
2.Prototypecommunications systems with software defined radio (SDR) technology to verifyspecifications and investigate waveform enhancements.
3.Developsoftware models to simulate air-to-ground communications channels, and emulatethe channels with hardware to characterize the impacts of various signalpropagation effects on aerial communications performance, as well as ways toimprove it.
4.Becomefamiliar with a specific embedded system (e.g., GPS, data link terminal) andits operation to assist in defining system test approaches, collectingperformance data, and defining and implementing software improvements.
5.Developa 6 degrees-of-freedom Kalman filter model for modeling aircraft trajectoriesto be used in a high fidelity communication simulation and modeling tool.
6.Developmentand implementation of a simulation framework for modeling different types ofantenna search algorithms in a C based data link simulator and MATLAB.
Aninterest in wireless communications, networking, modeling & simulation, analysis,or other similar technical disciplines.
Strong,hierarchical problem-solving skills
Abilityto effectively write and present technical material
Abilityto work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Understandingof wireless communications, networking technologies, or digital signal processing
"Hands-on"skills (e.g. RF laboratory test equipment or GNU Radio) or familiarity with computer skills such as C , MATLAB,Mathematica, OPNET, Systems Tool Kit or similar modeling tools.
Currently pursuing(or recently received) a degree in Electrical Engineering, ComputerEngineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics orsimilar field, with an interest in communications or other relevant technicaldisciplines
Students need to be currently enrolled and will be enrolled the following semester in a full-time in an accredited degree-seeking university program.\
70% of MITRE’s full-time jobsrequire US government security clearances, this internship/co-op requires thatcandidates are clearable.\
Immediate family of MITRE employees are not eligible for internships.\
