DEFINITIONPerformSUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDWorks under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator and Horticulturists of the Botanic Gardens.Supervises volunteers or other subordinate workers at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens.ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENT--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Essential Functions: May not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.1. Work with volunteers.2. Prepare, plant and maintain on and off-site annual flower beds and landscapes.3. Develop educational materials.4. Supervise volunteers in planting and maintaining on and off-site annual flower beds and landscapes.5. Assist in developing and implementing work plans for therapeutic experiences among client/volunteers.QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of the following:General horticultural knowledge including: plant id, propagation and soil sciencePest identification and control methodsPlant propagation techniquesUnderstanding of operations, services and activities of a public gardenPrinciples of volunteer managementPertinent federal, state, and local laws and regulationsGreenhouse operation and maintenanceGreenhouse mechanical control operation and maintenanceHow to maintain a safe environmentComputer skillsValid driver's licenseProficient writing and communication skillsAble to work with diverse groups of peopleAbility to:Assist public with diverse questions about horticulture, history, mission and operation of Cheyenne Botanic GardenBe resourceful, do more with less and creatively stretch limited funds. Find unique solutions to complex problemsAssist in scheduling work activitiesAssist in setting out bedding plants in springWork scheduled shift and utilize work week adjustment for special eventsSafely apply pesticidesWork harmoniously with staff, volunteers and interns from all backgrounds, identities and, ages, orientation and abilitiesEXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINESExperience:Must be in an undergraduate or graduate program focusing on horticulture, plant science or public gardens.Experience in greenhouse horticulture/agricultureWORKING CONDITIONSEnvironmental Conditions:Indoor, outdoor and a greenhouse plant-filled environment; cool, warm and humid air may regularly occur; exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather; exposure to fertilizers, agricultural chemicals and pest control agents. Outdoor environments in different seasons.Physical Conditions:Essential and marginal duties require a high level of stamina and a good physical condition. Daily duties may include moderate lifting, carrying, walking, repeated bending, often being on your feet much of the day, working with garden tools, working outside in adverse conditions, safely operating mechanical equipment, operation of computers, the ability to distinguish colors and the ability to drive city vehicles safely.Must be able to do physically demanding work such as shoveling, planting, running a wheelbarrow, etc.
