Job Description

Internship Purpose and Goals

• To assess, index, and transfer paper-based information and records included in the Historic Architect Research files and/or historic mills files to an electronic database.

• This project will make significant contribution to increased collection accessibility for researchers and Cultural Resource Management professionals at the State Historic Preservation Office and the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Time Commitment: Duration: Fall Semester

Frequency: Minimum of 8 hours per week,unpaid.

Hours must be completed Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. Duties and Essential Activities

• Under staff direction, index information for the historic architect files and/or the historic mills files.

• Evaluate files for completeness, and assess levels and types of information.

• Establish appropriate categories of pertinent information for electronic database.

• Record all critical information into database. Physical and Mental Requirements

• Pursuing a degree in history, historic preservation, planning, or archaeology.

• Have an interest in historic preservation, architecture or archaeology.

• Detail oriented and strong research skills are expected.

• Must conduct oneself in a mature/professional manner and able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision

• Ability to lift 40 lbs.

• Experience with Microsoft Office, Access Database and Adobe suite preferred. Training

• The selected intern will be trained to use SHPO's Access Database and any other programs required for completing tasks.

• The intern will be trained in basic archival theory. Department/Supervisor

• The internship will be completed for the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) which is responsible for assisting communities and individuals with the identification and preservation of Iowa's historic and prehistoric cultural resources.

• The internship will be supervised by SHPO's Architectural Historians

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
