CULTURAL ORIENTATION INTERN

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: Cultural orientation is a 12 hour, 4 day social adjustment course for newly arrived refugees. The program includes essential information using content-based instruction to help participants understand their new community and aid in cultural adjustment to a new life. The cultural orientation intern will play a key role in planning and teaching group cultural orientation classes that will be held weekly on Thursdays. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contact newly arrived clients to ensure their attendance at monthly cultural orientation classes.
  • Identify languages needed for CO interpretation, based on previous month's arrivals, and secure interpretation using bank of interns and volunteer community interpreters.
  • Monitor and track client attendance
  • Administer cultural orientation assessments in person and/or by phone.
  • Enter CO attendance and assessments in Efforts to Outcomes database.
  • Assist CO facilitators in preparing materials needed for lessons
  • Other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate level studies preferred in social sciences, education, international relations or a related field.

  • Must speak English and Spanish, Arabic or Dari.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

  • Previous teaching experience preferred, particularly with English language learners.

  • Strong desire to help refugees rebuild their lives in New Jersey.

  • Patience, understanding, flexibility, and an unceasingly positive attitude

  • Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.

  • Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Increased understanding of the refugee resettlement process.
  • Increased awareness of cultural differences and cultural adjustment process.
  • Increased skills relating to data entry and data tracking systems in a non-profit environment
