The DeCA operates a worldwide commissary system that provides quality grocery products at cost to active duty military personnel and retirees, members of the Reserve and National Guard, and their families. The agency employs about 18,000 people and its annual sales exceed $6 billion.

Duties

The purpose of this intern position is to develop the incumbent for placement in a Produce Department Manager, GS-1144-07, position through a combination of a one-year planned formal training plan and on-the-job work assignments. At the GS-05 grade level the major duties are: • Performs a variety of instructional assignments and tasks designed to develop knowledge of and skill in produce department operations. • Stocks produce department merchandise learning to identify and distinguish among all types of fruit and vegetable products and grocery items which may be located in the produce department. • Becomes familiar with and learns to use a variety of automated business systems necessary to effective produce department operations. • Learns and practices all food safety, sanitation, handling, and processing regulations and all safety regulations and processes associated with the operation of commissary machinery and equipment including power trimmers, knives, cutting tools, pallet jacks, forklifts, etc. • Participates in planning and conducting inventories to learn the process and to understand the importance of proper ordering, pricing, and storage techniques in meeting required accountability.

Qualifications

In accordance with the Group Coverage Qualifications Standard for Administrative and Management Positions, and the individual occupation requirements for the Commissary Management series, http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/Standards/IORs/gs1100/1144.htm, applicants must possess three years of general experience, one year of which was equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level OR a four year course of study leading to a conferred Bachelor's Degree OR a qualifying combination of education and experience by the closing date of this announcement. Examples of specialized experience include: Demonstrating the ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data and recognize solutions. Planning and organizing work. Administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that are necessary to perform the duties of Commissary Management Specialist.

In addition to meeting the qualifications outlined above, you must also meet the following requirements: • Time after competitive appointment: Candidates applying under merit promotion must have completed three months of civilian service after a competitive appointment by the closing date of this announcement.
