Dow Chemical Research and Development Internship: Developing Failure Criteria for Multilayer Polymeric Films in India, India

Location - India, Mumbai

TheDow Chemical Companyis offering great business career opportunities in a global and international environment. We are looking for an ambitious Student (m/f) supporting our business who is interested in doing an Internship on Developing failure criteria for multilayer polymeric films subjected to biaxial loading.

Project Description

Problem statement:

  • The flexible multilayer films in applications such as large format pouches, stretch hood, stretch wrap, airbag are subject to biaxial loading.

  • Use of maximum strain criteria based on uniaxial loading has been found to be inadequate to predict failure correctly. Failure criteria suitable for biaxial loading need to be adopted in the modeling.

  • There is no well documented theory available on selection of failure criteria and deployment of the same in CAE model.

  • Further more it is important to identify type of tests required for data generation for the material model and failure criteria.

Scope of Work :

  • Literature survey to identify suitable failure theories for flexible laminates

  • Quantify the error in use of simple max. strain failure criteria

  • Identify failure mechanisms e.g. yielding, cracking, delamination, buckling

  • Identify suitable failure criteria for a variety of laminates depending on type of loading

  • Propose lab test methods for data generation

  • Perform Testing

  • Gain understanding of the best practice to generate true stress/strain model input from engineering stress/stain test data for polymeric materials with large strain (>1000% engineering strain) and involving necking (applicable to polyolefin films and silicone sealants)

  • Developing the understanding of the failure criteria would provide methodology for optimum laminate design for improved failure performance.

  • Another challenge is to be able to predict the failure of laminate given the properties of the individual films.

You can start between January-2018 to June-2018 for a period of 3 months (exact timing to be discussed). You will be remunerated.

  • Master student in Mechanical Engineering, Fracture Mechanics, Polymer Science

  • MS or Ph D in Solid Mechanics, and more preferably in multilayer flexible laminates

  • Ability to speak fluently in English.
