Development and Characterization of Adenovirus Vaccines

Location: Leiden

Hours: 40 hours/week starting approx. September 2017 for at least 6 months


Vaccine Generation is a research department that focuses on the first step in Janssen’s innovative pipeline of Viral Vaccine Discovery. The research is concentrated on the development of new vaccines against infectious diseases and accompanying technologies.

The group consists of more than 20 people working in different sub-teams spanning a wide range of Janssen’s R&D projects (e.g. HPV, RSV, HIV, Zika, Ebola and Marburg vaccines). There is a lot of interaction between the different sub-teams within Vaccine Generation and so the curious intern will also learn extensively from the other pioneering projects running within the department. This internship concerns a vacancy in the Adenovirus Team.

Job description:

The intern will work within the Adenovirus team with focus on the research involved for vaccine development and characterization. In the project there is room for innovation and independence as well as close team work. Laboratory work will include cell culture, virus culture, virus manipulation via molecular biology, RT-(q)PCR, virus titration, and protein expression assays. Apart from laboratory work the student will also be stimulated to read accompanying literature, design experiments, and present results.


Minimum Qualifications:

We are looking for a motivated Master student preferably with experience in molecular biology and/or virology. Internship is for at least 6 months.


The most important competences for this position are accuracy, planning and communication capabilities. In addition, you need to be flexible, eager to learn and have a critical attitude.

Being a student with an EU nationality is required for this internship.
