HOURS OF WORK: 9:00 AM -5:30 PM (7.5 hours)

HOURS PER WEEK: Minimum of 15 hours

RATE: $15 per hour (undergraduate) $19 per hour (graduate)

FLSA: Nonexempt

Start Date: September 2017

Summary

This internship will provide one student with the opportunity to work with our construction management team to assist and observe construction activities managed from our field office in Manhattan, NYC. This office focuses on new civil infrastructure construction underway in the future LIRR Station’s caverns and tunnels under GCT. Various work exposure includes: technical calculations; review and documentation; project controls (scheduling, estimating and risk management reporting); site safety; quality control; contract procurement; field site visits; meeting participation; and other related office engineering duties.

East Side Access is one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects currently underway in the United States with a history that reaches back to the 1950’s when discussions were first held regarding regional transportation planning. The project encompasses work in multiple locations in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx and includes more than eight miles of tunneling.

When completed, East Side Access will serve approximately 162,000 customers a day, providing a faster and easier commute from Long Island and Queens to the east side of Manhattan in a new 8-track terminal and concourse below Grand Central Terminal.

Responsibilities

The intern will report directly to the Heavy Civil and Facilities Project Management Team overseeing Manhattan Construction. Assignment will involve both office and field work under close oversight direction by the program manager, project engineers and inspectors. Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist project and office engineers with their daily activities
  • Assist in the reviews of contract and shop drawings
  • Assist in the tracking of quality control records
  • Assist senior inspectors with observation and documentation of the quality of the contractor’s work to ensure conformance with the contract documents
  • Assist with general and task specific safety and environmental surveillance
  • Assist with preparation of progress photos and documents to support progress meetings and reports
  • Assist with preparation of weekly, monthly and ad hoc technical reports and resolution of claims, etc.
  • Attend meetings and take meeting minutes

Qualifications

Good understanding of engineering principals

Strong analytical and technical skills

Computer literacy

Good communication skills

Education and Experience

Undergraduate (junior and senior students, preferred) or graduate student, studying engineering with some class work in construction and project management.
