Job Overview/Summary: The Media Relations Intern will join a team that focuses on raising the visibility of the International Rescue Committee’s humanitarian aid programs, both international and domestic, and turning public attention to the organization’s priority issues. The intern must have a genuine interest and background in the humanitarian aid world and in public relations. S/he will support several ongoing or expanding outreach campaigns, as well as providing assistance on other media relations projects. The internship will provide the opportunity to hone media relations and writing skills and support IRC efforts to generate coverage of its work.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Help generate media coverage for the IRC’s humanitarian aid work, both domestically and around the world, through assistance in proactive and reactive media
  • Help generate media coverage linked to the IRC’s marketing campaigns as appropriate, including Mother’s Day, end of year and IRC’s special events
  • Update the IRC’s media database and build new targeted lists, for specific issues
  • Research target outlets and markets for IRC stories & campaigns
  • Conduct background research on country or region-specific crises, per emergencies and ongoing country programming
  • Draft press releases and other communications material as required
  • Provide general media outreach support during emergencies
  • Using analytics tool, provide a regular cadence of updates on IRC media measurement and impact
  • Lead development of weekly communications update and maintain editorial calendar

Job Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate is a student or recent graduate in journalism or international relations.
  • Previous experience working or interning for a media outlet or humanitarian aid agency.
  • Exemplary drafting and research skills – ideally with a focus on humanitarian aid or international relations.
  • Keen interest in and knowledge of mainstream media
  • Familiarity with international/humanitarian issues
  • Excellent oral communications skills – proficiency in foreign languages a plus
  • Sharp, analytical, quick-thinking and proactive
  • Must be able to commit to a full-time work schedule between mid-June and mid-September

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain first-hand experience and knowledge of media relations
  • Hone writing skills to effectively communicate IRC programs
  • Become comfortable with the research and planning process prior to pitching
  • Gain greater familiarity and knowledge of the humanitarian aid sector within the US and internationally
  • Gain experience crafting targeted pitches for a variety of audiences, including through social media
  • Learn to evaluate and measure news coverage data through outlet research and using analytics databases
