We Make a Difference every day with every engagement. / / / So what does a Surface Water Intern at Michael Baker International do? / As a part of our Surface Water Team you would provide assistance to both external and internal clients on a variety of projects. The Surface Water Department consists of team members who specialize in storm water management and water quality. As an intern you may support both groups.

Our Storm Water Management team takes on tasks such as:

  • Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling

  • Design of flood control structures

  • Development of project studies and reports

  • Design of transportation drainage and storm drain systems

  • Alternative design analyses
    Our Water Quality Team works on tasks such as:

  • NPDES program development and implementation

  • Review and interpretation of permits and regulations

  • Preparation and implementation of construction and post-construction storm water plans

  • Inspections of commercial, industrial, or construction sites

  • Program assessment and improvement plans

  • Design of permanent treatment BMPs
    An ideal Surface Water Intern would be able to quickly adjust to different tasks to provide support for multiple projects and to either group. This position requires the willingness to complete both office and field based assignments. Tasks assigned will require working as part of a team as well as working individually, and occasional overtime. / / / Can you walk me through a typical day of a Surface Water Intern? / A Surface Water Intern may be involved with any number of tasks. Some days will be in the office and others may be in the field. Various tasks would include:

  • Provide support for hydrology or hydraulics studies by delineating watersheds, completing As-Built review, providing CAD support, or completing a field investigation.

  • Complete calculations to determine runoff volumes or flow rates.

  • Summarize findings of a study in a report and create supporting exhibits.

  • Complete field work by gathering project site information, inspecting a construction or industrial site, confirming post-construction BMP installation, or identifying assets.

  • Review and summarize NPDES permits or correspondence from regulatory agencies.

  • Develop construction or post-construction storm water compliance plans such as SWPPPs, WQMPs, LID Plans, etc.

  • Develop water quality program elements, assess the effectiveness of various program implementation elements, and gather information to support reporting. / What can I expect for a career path, and where might this role take me? /

    Candidate must be enrolled and pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering at an accredited university or college.

  • Minimum of 1 years of completed post-secondary coursework in student’s field of study.

  • Minimum 2.5 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and MS Office.

  • Experience with GIS.
