About This Position
In keeping with the Marian Medical Center philosophy, a Student Nurse Intern works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse Preceptor.
Nursing services may be rendered by a student when these services are incidental to the course of study of one of the following: a) A student enrolled in a board-approved pre-licensure program or school of nursing. b) Taking a board-approved continuing education course or a post-licensure course. Student Interns work under their individual scope of practice: Certified Nursing Assistant/unlicensed personnel or Licensed Vocational Nurse. 1.Demonstrates a caring compassionate attitude toward others. 2.Demonstrates ability to organize and prioritize work efficiently. 3.Demonstrates clear, effective, written and oral English skills, and objective active listening skills. 4.Reacts calmly and efficiently in emergencies. 5.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and staff. 6.Ability to operate common medical equipment, i.e., IVAC thermometers, weight scales, blood pressure monitors, blood glucose monitors, etc. 7.Knowledge of medical terminology and basic procedures. 8.Relates to patients/visitors empathetically and tactfully. 9.Demonstrates working knowledge of hospital safety policies and health standards. 10.Ability to follow written and oral instructions in exact detail. Unlicensed Personnel perform tasks of a nursing assistant, unless currently enrolled in Nursing 19 Student Intern at Cuesta College. Unlicensed personnel (including CNAs) cannot perform nursing functions in lieu of a registered nurse or under the direct clinical supervision of a registered nurse that require a substantial amount of scientific knowledge and technical skills, including, but not limited to, any of the following: 1.Administration of medication. 2.Venipuncture or intravenous therapy. 3.Parenteral or tube feedings. 4.Invasive procedures including inserting nasogastric tubes, inserting catheters, or tracheal suctioning. 5.Assessment of patient condition. 6.Educating patients and their families concerning the patient?s health care problems, including post-discharge care. 7.Moderate complexity laboratory tests.
Must have completed a minimum of one year of clinical training in a board approved nursing school, or is a Licensed Vocational Nurse, or is a Certified Nursing Assistant. Must be currently enrolled in a board approved nursing program or is a nurse licensed in another state or country awaiting to take the NCLEX exam. Current CPR Certification.
