Our reputation for developing advanced braking equipment for freight cars is unsurpassed in the industry. We manufacture control valves, empty – load equipment, reservoirs and other freight car pneumatic brake equipment products. We also manufacture Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brake equipment and computerized automated single car test devices.

Job Summary

The Wabtec Materials Laboratory is responsible for specifying, analyzing and testing all types of materials (metals, plastics, rubber, coatings, etc.) for our products. The laboratory contains state of the art materials test systems including: Tensile Machine, FTIR, Hardness Testers, Eddy Current/UT Thickness Testers, Microscopes, etc. The lab falls under the Freight Engineering Department, however it also supports Freight Manufacturing and Quality as well as the Locomotive Products and Passenger Transit Divisions.


Intern will have responsibilities on projects that include:

  • Test parts/materials on a variety of lab equipment

  • Write Test specs/procedures

  • Develop/Assist with new/improved lab tests/processes

  • Assist with dimensional measurements (profilometer, Contour Tracer, laser interferometer)

  • 5S/Organize


  • Junior/Senior Materials Engineering (Metal/Plastics/Rubber specialties preferred) at an accredited University

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Strong computer skills

  • Standard Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)

  • Ability to quickly learn new systems (FTIR, Contour Tracer, Tensile Machine)

  • Understanding of Material Test Theory/Methods

  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
